Tavern Tasty Meats are Norfolk's only accredited rare breeds butcher, supplying traditional breed meats including pork, bacon, ham, lamb and beef. We cure and smoke our bacon and hams at our shop in Swafield.
• Beef:
Rare Breed beef has distinctive eating qualities. White Park, Gloucester and Longhorn are all regularly stocked having been Norfolk reared and especially selected by us. Where one of the listed rare breeds is not available, the best local alternative will be used. The beef is matured for 24 days.
This year we have been supplied exclusively by Tim Arnold of Bridge Farm, Bradfield, with his herd of traditional Hereford beef - grazing on lush water meadows just 2 miles from our shop. It is a closed herd on unsprayed naturally fertilised grass for most of the year, straw yards during the Winter.
• Rare Breed Pork:
Tavern Tasty rare breed pork is produced on our own farm at Smallburgh in Norfolk. The predominant breeds used are Gloucester Old Spot, British Lop and British Saddleback.
We have favored our slow growing rare breeds pigs over the past 20 years because they have produced superior eating quality, always with excellent crackling and full of flavor.
• Free Range Chicken:
Free range chicken is supplied to us by a Sutton Hoo producer and by the Peart Family at Hindolveston in North Norfolk.
• Lamb:
The majority of our rare breed lamb is produced from our spring lambing flock of Southdown Sheep. The lambs are grazed on marshes and pastures in the heart of the Norfolk Broads which brings out the sweetness and tenderness in the meat that the Southdowns are renowned for.
• Homemade Sausages:
We are extremely proud of our range of sausages. Minced only once to ensure that the final product has texture combined with the juiciness and succulence obtained from rare breed pork. The 12 different varieties that we offer are all handmade, and in August 2010 were ranked in the top 20 sausages in the UK as nominated by www.sausagefans.co.uk
In September 2012 we won the Battle of the Bangers competition in Norwich with our Olde English sausage.
In October 2012 we won the BPEX Regional Heat with our innovative "Black Quack"; this is a Scotch Egg type product but involving a ducks egg encased in a mix of our award winning Olde English sausage meat and black pudding. Delicious with a pint of beer!
At the BPEX Regional Heats in October 2012 we won Gold Awards for: Gammon, Bacon, Sausage Rolls, Black Quack, and the Smoked Sausage & Caramelised Onion Quiche. The Black Quack Regional Heat win entitles us to go forward to the National BPEX competition held in London in June 2012.
• Homemade Pies:
We have a range of Large, Medium and Individual short crust pastry meat pies with a generous filling and either gravy or sauce. The individual pies have a light but tasty puff pastry topping. Our pies can be supplied either ready cooked or frozen (for you to bake off, giving a freshly baked experience) We also produce a range of delicious quiches including meat free.
