What is family mediation?

Mediation is a process to help couples who have decided to separate or divorce to work together to make their own decisions about the future rather than going to court or using lawyers to negotiate a settlement. This may include making arrangements for their children, housing or finances.

Couples usually have a number of meetings with their mediator who will help them identify the issues which need to be resolved, explore options and reach practical solutions. If there are financial issues to resolve, full financial disclosure must be provided and the mediator will assist you to do this.

"Mediation reduces tension and hostility, improves communication, and is usually a cheaper and much quicker way of resolving disputes than going to court." says Senior Solicitor, Louise Larkins.

Louise and her colleague Zen Thompson are qualified and practising solicitors who understand the law as well as being trained in mediation skills. Whilst the mediator must remain impartial and cannot therefore give legal advice, they can give information to assist with decision-making. Mediation usually works best when couples seek legal advice from their own solicitors between sessions and to review any final proposals before these are converted into a binding agreement.
